Star Wars Day: 5 Heavy Lifts Done Using the Force

Happy Star Wars Day! Your only excuse for not going to the gym today is the Jedi Council had you on assignment somewhere off-planet.

Jedi Master Yoda was the original life coach. Most of us grew up ingesting and internalizing his one-liner life lessons that rang true across generations.

At one point, Yoda explained pretty well that the Force’s capabilities had almost nothing to do with a person’s physical strength. “Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter,” he said, pinching Luke Skywalker’s arm.

Nevertheless, Jedi clearly could do things with the Force that would make most powerlifters and gym rats envious. Here are the top 5 heaviest things that Force-users lifted or moved, in ascending order.

1. A mudhorn

Grogu may be arguably the smallest character or significance in the Star Wars universe. That said, his limited command of the Force made him capable of some pretty impressive feats. Perhaps the most notable of these was stopping a mudhorn in a full charge, then lifting it into the air.

The design of the mudhorn drew heavy inspiration from the extinct elasmotherium, nicknamed the “Siberian unicorn.” The Siberian unicorn supposedly weighed between 3.5-5 tons. The mudhorn appears to have been a little larger in scale, likely between 7-8 tons.

No one knows for sure what species Grogu is, but his kind are clearly the Mr. Olympias of the galaxy.

2. A pile of boulders

When Rey [last name redacted] set out to rescue Resistance forces under siege on Crait, there was a challenge. The only hope of an exit was blocked by an impenetrable barrier of fallen rock.

We can really only estimate the combined weight of the dozens of boulders Rey moved all at once. It appears that gravity was the same, so all these rocks together would likely have been in the ballpark of about 5-10 tons.

3. Luke Skywalker’s X-wing

It’s one of the most iconic scenes in cinematic history. After Luke fails to do so, Yoda capped a teaching moment by pulling Luke’s submerged starfighter out of a swamp lake and onto the bank.

A T-65B X-wing starfighter weighs approximately 10 tons. Not bad for a 2-foot tall man going 900 years old while walking with a cane. At least a portion of the lift would have been easier from a weight perspective by buoyancy of the water. Outside of that, Yoda essentially lifted a semi out of that lake.

2. A huge metal pillar

We’re back to Yoda again. After a lightsaber fight with Yoda, Count Dooku escaped defeat by destabilizing a supposedly benign metal pillar. It then began to keel over toward an incapacitated Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker. Yoda reached out with the Force and stopped it just before it hit the ground, maneuvered it elsewhere, and dropped it.

The two most impressive aspects of this were the weight and the method. Again, we’re estimating here based on little information, but the falling object looked as if it weighed somewhere around 15-20 tons. The second-most impressive thing is that Yoda just straight up caught that thing. The control of the initial downward force of the pillar on a moment’s notice is on par with Grogu stopping a mudhorn mid-charge.

1. A Star Destroyer

The top spot on this list is by an incomprehensibly wide margin. No, the writer does not care if this instance is decanonized or that the feat is technically inaccurate. It was too impressive to ignore.

Starkiller, a fabled apprentice of Darth Vader, set out to destroy an Imperial shipyard, which he eventually accomplished with the exception of a single Star Destroyer that began to fall towards the planet.

Starkiller didn’t actually pull the Star Destroyer down despite what several Youtube videos suggest. But, what he did was alter the flightpath of the cruiser to control where it landed. It obviously still involved a significant affectation of the ship’s position.

An Imperial-1 Class Star Destroyer is approximately 1,600 meters in length, or in other words, an entire mile long. Imagine five U.S. aircraft carriers hurtling out of the sky. Therefore, we understand that Starkiller essentially pulled a small city out of midair.
