Banded Barbell Squat

Banded Barbell Squat

The squat is a primal human movement that has been a staple in strength training for decades. A more advanced variation of the barbell squat is the banded barbell squat. This movement involves adding elastic resistance in addition to the weight on the bar and performing the squat under a dynamic load. The progressive resistance of resistance bands causes the weight to be much more difficult at the top of the squat and easier in the bottom. The banded barbell squat helps increase power output through the concentric or raising phase, of the squat.

SET UP

To set up for a banded barbell squat you will need your Slastix, two heavy dumbbells, and let’s not forget the barbell. We recommending using the Slastix out of a VITL kit so that you may add more Slastix from the kit to increase the band tension on the bar. It is also important to note that the dumbbells you choose should weigh 100 .lbs or more. Last, you will want to make sure that you place the dumbbells exactly in line with where you will you be squatting so that the line of pull created by the Slastix is not pulling you forward or back.

APPLICATION

The banded barbell squat is for clients or athletes who are familiar with the standard squat already. Using band resistance in the squat can help train the central nervous system to move faster and help you be more explosive out of the bottom of the movement. Try out the banded barbell squat with Slastix to introduce a new training stimulus and break through plateaus in the gym.
